Find a shared client need

Begin with recurring gaps in service, such as a business sale requiring both tax and investment planning. Define what each professional does and what falls outside their scope. The client should know who is responsible for each decision.

Agree on information and compensation

Set a process for obtaining appropriate permission before sharing client information. Review any referral payment or joint marketing arrangement with the firm’s compliance and legal teams. Disclosure obligations and restrictions depend on the parties and arrangement; do not assume an informal introduction makes the rules disappear.

Test the relationship with a workflow

Use a written agenda for joint meetings, named owners, and a follow-up schedule. Evaluate responsiveness, coordination, and unresolved questions. Avoid presenting another professional’s involvement as a guarantee of a result or an endorsement of every service they offer.
